How to Stay Accountable Over the Festive Season

As December rolls in, the festive season brings with it a whirlwind of indulgence. It's a time when we often find ourselves enjoying more food and drink than usual, while the colder weather and a bustling social calendar might challenge our fitness and health routines. But not to worry, a well-crafted New Year’s Resolution can set things right, right?

Indeed, the holidays are meant for enjoyment and appreciation. Remember, a few festive feasts won’t undo a year's worth of hard work. However, it’s common to feel a little off-track and tempted to let go of healthy habits entirely during this period.

To help you maintain a sense of balance and prevent starting the New Year back at square one, I’ve compiled some helpful tips:

Strategic Planning: A quick glance at your calendar to note down big events can help you stay mindful. It’s easy to let the holiday spirit turn a few extra events into a month-long spree. Stay aware and plan nutritious meals and robust workouts around these festive gatherings. This way, you can enjoy the celebrations (guilt-free) knowing you’ve kept up with your health goals.

Adapt and Keep Moving: Holiday routines might disrupt your regular workout schedule. If gym visits drop from three times to once a week, that’s okay. Plan for longer or more efficient workouts when you can. Emphasise compound exercises for maximum impact with minimal equipment. On off days, consider online workouts or gentle yoga sessions – the aim is to stay active.

Step it Up: Walking is a simple yet effective way to stay healthy. It aids digestion, especially after big meals and is great for mental well-being. Aiming for a quick walk post-meals can regulate blood sugar, lower blood pressure and uplift your mood.

Nutritious Choices First: While tempting treats like roast potatoes and Christmas pudding beckon, start by filling your plate with nutritious items like lean turkey and roasted vegetables. This approach ensures you get your fill of healthy foods before indulging in the richer fare.

Mindful and Grateful Eating: Avoid binge-eating and negative thoughts by eating mindfully. Savour the taste, colours and variety of your food. Chew slowly and be thankful for the meal. Remember, each day is a new opportunity to reset and make healthier choices.

Embrace the Joy: Lastly, thoroughly enjoy the holiday season. It’s these times filled with delicious food, loved ones and joyful moments that make life special. Remember, balance is the essence of a healthy lifestyle.
